Few spots in the world can match the range and depth of Lake Tahoe. Its wide expanse of pristine fresh water is a marvel and the surrounding scenery is spectacular. Lake Tahoe has a diverse range of fish species and many of them grow to immense size. The largest ever caught was a 45 pounder, however a fish of ten pounds or more are relatively common in the lake. The most common species are the Mackinaw, not native to Lake Tahoe they were actually imported from Lake Michigan. These fish tend to live in the deeper parts of the lake and are usually caught with trolling lines. The largest are the Brown Trout, which grow to a ripe old age due to their elusiveness. Extremely hard to catch, these are the main prize of Lake Tahoe anglers. The smaller Rainbow Trout are considered the best eating fish and are the target of anglers using flys on the shallower waters. The Kokanee Salmon also thrive in the lake and are the most spirited fighters on the line. The many rivers and streams that low into Lake Tahoe are also prime fishing grounds for trout and salmon, as well as catfish and sunfish.
